New year, new you

I’m not one for New Year’s resolutions but I know I’m in the minority. It can be a great time for people to jump start new healthy habits. If you want to find a better way to exercise, finally address those nagging pains or discover your bodies potential in movement I encourage you to try a session. I’m available for sessions in my studio in Portland or via video chat online wherever you are.

My approach to Pilates is focused yet flexible. If you’re looking to improve sport’s performance we will work on specific training that supports your endeavors. If you are struggling with pain and/or injuries we will work gently to effectively create healthy movement and allow you to regain what you’ve lost and reclaim your health. If you want to get fit for the first time or back in shape after a long hiatus from exercise we’ll tackle your goals with carefully chosen workouts that give you a balanced body. If you want to improve your balance we will practice safety and methodically to rebuild your strength, flexibility and awareness to restore healthy proprioception, your bodies sense of itself in space and response to changing terrain. There’s no end to what you can do with Pilates!  But to get results you have to begin. I’m here to help you every step of the way.

Pilates for pain

It’s common thinking that pain is just an inevitable part of aging. Many think that chronic back pain is just “how it is” after a certain age. But most of what people think is due to age is really caused by lack of movement. Not necessarily lack of strength or flexibility but lack of healthy varied movement. Mobility and stability of our spine and joints is vital for our health and posture. Doing exercises that focus on building muscles and stretching muscles often do not help with pain, sometimes even making it worse. Pilates is focused on moving the spine and all the joints in their various ranges of motion. The exercises develop both stability and mobility. Along with the physical movements you are also focused on breathing and tuning into your body, learning how to move well and improving your body mechanics and this awareness carries into everything you do in life. This is the “mind-body connection” that is often cited in the benefits of doing Pilates.

Of course the body needs strength and flexibility. But those alone are not enough. By practicing the Pilates exercises consistently you build your awareness along with the strength and flexibility your body needs. You move in all the ways a body needs to work to keep its functionality and longevity. This is how chronic pain can be diminished and conquered. Humans are made to move and when we have a sedentary life and repetitive motions that aren’t balanced by other actions we develop aches and pains that don’t go away. If you are experiencing pain or discomfort and you’ve “tried everything” maybe you could give Pilates a chance. Even if you did Pilates and did not get results it could be that you didn’t have a teacher with skills in dealing with pain or injuries. I have been teaching for over 20 years and most of my experience is with people who are struggling with chronic pain and/or injuries. Back pain, even post back surgery, fibromyalgia, spinal stenosis, frozen shoulder and sciatica are just a few of the issues I’ve helped people with. I have a gift for seeing where movements are not working and helping you find a way to change movement patterns and get freedom from pain and experience more ease and capabilities in your body. Why do Pilates?

I’ve written about what Pilates is but I’d like to address the why. Why do I do Pilates and why should you?

Personally after 30 years of practicing Pilates I can say it’s a staple in my life. I never go long without it, and when I do I’m always reminded of how much better my life is when I practice it. I have had countless injuries from gymnastics, dance and life and Pilates has never failed to help me recover. I’m in less pain now then I was 10 years ago while still dancing and I’m sure without my regular Pilates practice that wouldn’t be the case. I’ve conquered sciatica, rotator cuff tears, a herniated disc and also manage my early arthritis pain with Pilates. I’m happy to continue looking fit but much more happy to be pain free and functional as I’m aging. It’s a workout and it’s also an invaluable part of my wellness overall.

So, why should you consider Pilates?  Maybe you feel you’re getting stiff with age?  Perhaps you think back pain is inevitable? Possibly you are doing a lot of exercise and stiff experience pain or have injuries that just won’t seem to go away?  You might have a sedentary job and have no movement in your daily life. You might hate the gym. You may feel like you aren’t coordinated or have poor balance. Possibly you are waiting until you’re “in better shape” before you begin?

I’m not exaggerating when I say that Pilates can help with all of these issues. Well, unless you wait for getting in shape before you start practicing! But truly, it will help with all of these issues. And let’s not forget stress. Do you ever feel stress?  Pilates is a meditative movement, you focus on breathing and moving mindfully and it will always relieve stress  if you’re willing to show up and move and breathe. It’s not going to magically give you enlightenment or a butt like Beyoncé. But it can transform your body, mind and life with consistent practice.

Consistency is key because you get out what you put in. One hour a week will not change your physical structure. Nothing is going to do that in one hour a week. Those stars you see who have toned and defined everything are doing Pilates many hours per week. But if so one hour a week consistently you will see changes. You will reap benefits. And if you do more you’ll see more results. That’s how everything works. So in this sense Pilates is not “magic”. But even one hour per week can greatly improve your body, mind and life and when you think of how you probably work 40 hours or more then one hour a week giving you results is pretty magical.

Even if doing regular sessions in the studio on the Pilates equipment isn’t something you can do that’s no reason to not do a few sessions at all. I’m happy to help you with a mat routine designed just for you that will address all of your needs that you can do at home.  I’m even available to do this via video chat online.

So really the question is why aren’t you doing Pilates?

It’s not a fad!


I first did Pilates in 1989, before it was widely known. I was a competitive gymnast and injured my knee. After ACL surgery my surgeon prescribed both physical therapy and Pilates. While the PT focused solely on my knee in Pilates I was able to move and work my whole body without adversely affecting my knee. It was wonderful to feel strong and capable with the rest of my body even though I was not even able to walk!  My teacher was supportive and creative and I was so happy to go to those sessions and see progress each time.

Five years later I started teaching Pilates myself. A few years later it became quite a fad!  It was great to see it gain popularity but I was aware that it was far more beneficial than the hype that surrounded it let on. Many fads have come and gone but Pilates is still around. It is over one hundred years old. It’s evolved and yet still maintained its original principles. But sometimes people think it’s not “in” anymore. That new fads are better, more fun. And there are plenty of fitness methods that have great value but after practicing Pilates for 30 years now I have not found anything that I think is better for both fitness and rehab.

As a dancer I had many injuries and Pilates was invaluable in helping me heal from each and every one. A few years ago I was teaching gymnastics and wound up with a shoulder injury from spotting the kids over and over. I had help from bodyworkers and an amazing acupuncturist but my Pilates work was the cornerstone of my recovery. Now I’ve fully recovered from torn rotator cuff tears and elbow tendinitis. It took time. It was frustrating. But I persevered and regained my range of motion and strength. Pilates is amazing.

I’ve learned so much from my Pilates teacher trainer and others I’ve studied with. I have also learned a huge amount from my clients and my years of experience. But I think I’ve learned the most from my own injuries. I know what it’s like to be in pain and unable to train gymnastics, or dance. I’ve been unable to do basic things like walk a few blocks or even chop vegetables to make a meal. I’ve faced those challenges and with careful consistent work on the mat and the Pilates equipment slowly returned to a fully functional pain free life. When I work with people who are in pain and limited by injuries I have a deep understanding of what that feels like. I know that focusing on the injuries is important but it’s also invaluable to work on the parts of your body that are not bothering you and let you feel capable in those movements. I’m skilled in working with you in a way that challenges you without flaring things up and setting you back. And when setbacks happen I can tell you from personal experience that those are part of healing and while discouraging do not mean that you’ll never get better. I listen to your concerns and fears and empower you with things you can do when it seems like you can’t do anything.

I love working with people who are fit, athletes and people want to train for activities. But my real joy in teaching is working with people who are struggling with injuries or pain. Those who have been trying things but feeling like nothing helps. People who might think that they could never do Pilates. I’m here to tell you that you can do Pilates. Pilates is for you. I’m here to help you get through your challenging time and issues and find the other side. Helping someone get back to a pain free day, return to normal life and joyful activities. That’s the real power of Pilates. A “flat” stomach or “toned” arms are pretty nice but  I’m most interested in helping you feel better, move better and return to life!

Move your spine


So many fitness methods forget the spine. This is one thing that makes Pilates different. At the core of the Pilates method is the spine and moving it in all directions.

Chances are you sit a lot. Maybe over a computer. In a car. This creates tightness in the front of the body and weakness in the back. You can do bicep curls and crunches but those won’t do much for your overall fitness and they definitely won’t do anything for your back. The core workout fixation has people doing lots of abs but unless you also move your spine in all directions you’ll find that the curled up posture, stuck in a desk feeling won’t improve. Many things that are popular in the gym will actually just curl you up more! In Pilates we do a lot of spinal articulation. Since the spine is made up of joints the focus on moving each and every vertebrae is really wonderful for the health of your spine. Of course we are building strength and flexibility but those come from moving the spine in all directions and learning how to articulate, mobilize and stabilize the different parts of the spine. If you have back pain it can be scary to mi e your spine but that’s where the equipment comes in. The springs give support to let you move in ways that might not be accessible on the mat. Extending or arching the back is an important movement but can be problematic when you’ve got pain. But with small gentle exercises you will learn how to move safely and get your back back in shape!

Don’t let back pain stop you from trying Pilates. I’ve got over 20 years of experience working with people with pain and injuries, even herniated discs, and I will work with you gently and carefully to help you regain functional movement in your spine. Hanging out

Hanging like this has many benefits! Our shoulders are often very tight and we don’t get enough movement lifting up over our head. This means that our neck, shoulders and upper back are often very tight and compressed. Hanging on the Cadillac will stretch the shoulders and spine, decompressing the vertebrae and the discs. It can be challenging at first for your grip strength but that quickly becomes stronger and you become more confident and this exercise becomes very enjoyable. People often feel nervous at first but after a few times request it since it feels so good!

As kids we all hung from the monkey bars, climbed and jumped. As we get older we usually stop doing these things and our bodies get stiff and stagnant. With regular practice Pilates will help you feel younger and more mobile. Taking the body through all of the natural ranges of motion can both heal and prevent injuries. And it’s also fun and gives a sense of freedom and capability! Aging doesn’t have to mean losing physical abilities. When you do Pilates you will challenge strength, coordination and balance in a safe way. It’s never too late to restore your fitness or find it for the first time. You don’t have to suffer through boring or painfully strenuous routines. Pilates will be challenging but it also feels great to move and stretch and people have often said it’s like an active massage!

The magic of springs

The Pilates equipment is truly amazing. Each machine offers a full body workout with an almost infinite number of exercises. And the real magic is the springs!

The springs are there to make difficult movements easier. They also add more challenge as you are ready for it.  If your back is tight the springs help you get a better stretch than you can get on a mat. If you’re struggling with arm strength we will start with a light spring and as you get stronger progress to a heavier one.

The springs mimic how our muscles work, lengthening and contracting through our range of motion.  You work against the springs to extend them out and resist their pull to work your muscles in both directions of movement. Healthy movement requires muscles to work in both a shortening and strengthening contraction and the springs give the body the feedback it needs to learn how to maintain strength and support through all kinds of movement. This means things like squatting down and standing up get easier.  You build the strength required to both lower yourself down with support and raise back up ease.

Pilates can look like some relaxing moves that stretch your muscles. But in reality the exercises all develop strength and flexibility for functional movement. They all provide your body with what it needs to be a healthy human able to do the things you need and want to do in life. The benefits go far beyond how you look. And in addition to helping you feel better they give your body the ability to maintain healthy movement now and as you age, improving your longevity.  And having a long life full of movement and freedom from pain is the best benefit Pilates can offer.

Why are Private sessions worth it?

If you’ve gone to a Pilates mat class and found it really difficult and confusing you might want to try a Private session. The value of Private sessions is that you can go at your own pace and I will give you the best exercises for you and your specific needs. If you have neck issues I will modify exercises to give you the benefits without creating any stress on your neck. If you have chronic back pain we will find the movements that build strength without flaring up your back. The Pilates equipment is amazing in the way it can provide support and make movements easier because the springs provide assistance, and when you progress the same exercises can be made more challenging by changing those springs. When you are working with me one on one we can focus in on a specific area or give a full body session, depending on what you need in the moment. My role is to support you in your goals.

Even if doing Private sessions seems too expensive you’d be surprised how much you can gain from just a few sessions. If your goal is to learn exercises to do at home I’m happy to give you the tools to practice on your own and willing to continue offering support if you have questions once you’re on your own. We can make short videos or take detailed notes so you have a guide when you are on your own at home going through your program. If you can’t get into the studio I’m available to teach you via videochat, which I’ve had much success with. If you’ve only got 15 minutes to devote to exercise we will make a 15 minute routine addressing all of your issues, and you can do another session anytime you want to update or refine your program.

The value of a personal Pilates session is truly invaluable. As much as we’d all love to just have someone “fix” us the body doesn’t work like that, but it doesn’t take hours of sweating and straining either. A few carefully chosen exercises can give you great benefit if you continue to practice them consistently. Helping people get out of pain and feeling capable and confident in moving is my greatest joy in teaching. The spine

 

This is a little example of some exercises for the spine. They are also “ab work” which Pilates is known for. And ab work is great but the real benefit of Pilates is the focus on the spine. So few fitness methods focus on the spine. And without a healthy spine nothing else in the body really stands a chance of moving well. These exercises give you a chance to move your spine in all the directions it can move and the springs give you help to articulate and move smoothly through each and every vertebrae. The spine is really a long chain of joints and those joints all need movement to keep the spine strong and supple.

If you exercise back pain or even just stiffness Pilates can really help. With regular practice you will get stronger, stand taller and be more able to do things in your life with more ease and joy. My clients report being able to get through a long workday without pain, gardening without suffering stiffness the next day and being able to return to physical activities that they’d had to give up due to chronic pain or injuries.

If you’ve had to give up activities that you loved or feel like your body is not feeling good after your workday Pilates can truly help you return to a pain free and capable life. Joseph Pilates titled his book “Return to Life” and it really is a the truth about his method. Pilates is such an amazing system that will do far more than “tone” and “firm”, it will give your body what it needs to do the things that you might have had to give up and even give you the capability to do things you never thought possible. Looking good, feeling good and moving well are all you have to gain, and pain and stiffness are all you have to lose!

What the heck are “movement patterns “?

I have written about movement patterns quite a lot and I’ve realized that perhaps people might not really understand what that means and why they’re important. So I will try to explain the what and why.

Movement patterns are just how the body is, well, moving. Walking, sitting, reaching, bending. You’ve been told “lift with your legs, not your back” but unless your body knows how to do that the phrase is  useless.

The human body is an amazing system. When the spine and all the joints are moving properly it is capable of performing all kinds of things. With specific training it can achieve extraordinary feats. But unfortunately modern life has led to too much sitting and too little movement in daily life. This is something Joe Pilates saw happening over 100 years ago, and his method was designed to be a solution for this very problem!

Many fitness methods focus on strength, flexibility and “form”. But very few focus on movement. And fewer still focus on the spine itself. How the spine and all the joints function is imperative to health and longevity.  The dodgy is made to move. So the idea of “having good form” is much more complex than just “standing up straight” or keeping your shoulders “down”. When the movement patterns are not working properly you will be wearing your joints down and causing potential damage. The muscles you might think you’re working in a particular exercise might not be able to function so you’ll be overworking other muscles. There’s no quick fix to these issues, but with some careful and consistent work you’ll get your body moving more functionally and feel less pain and more freedom in movement. It won’t take long before you’ve improved those movement patterns and that results in healthier joints, less pain and tension.  This translates into all aspects of your life, so sitting, walking and all activities become easier. You can recover the ability to do things that you might have thought you lost due to age.

So, that’s what movement patterns are and why they’re important. Pilates is all about rebuilding movement patterns and giving your body the potential to do the things that you want to do.
